California Congressman Leaves Party to Run as Independent

  Rep. Kevin Kiley of California has announced that he will run for re-election as an independent, leaving the Republican Party behind. Redistricting means Kiley is facing a much more Democrat-leaning electorate. 

He makes the case I have been making for over a decade- that independents would answer only to their constituents rather than a party machine headquartered in DC. That said, successful politicians look out for their own careers first and foremost. He isn't running as an independent to make a statement. He is doing so because he feels it will give him the best chance to win. I consider that an encouraging sign. We'd be better off if most legislators were independents. When the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch are run by people in the same party, it is an informal end-run around the founder's formal system of checks and balances.

Most Red States are not "Welfare Recipients" from Blue States

 When you look at this study, the numbers are surprisingly close. Take out west Mississippi and South Carolina and the "Red States" get out what they put in.  That is really surprising because FEDGOV runs a trillion dollar debt every year. You would think that the average state would be getting much more money from FEDGOV than its citizen's pay in, since so much spending is with borrowed money and not taxes. But FEDGOV is so spendthrift that they can borrow a trillion every year and the states don't really get more than they put in. On a per-capita GPD basis they do pretty well too considering that there are more retired people in red-states.

Big, empty states tend to do the worst. They are most dependent on federal funding. Overall though, it seems like FEDGOV is spending so much on empire that the states could do without them just fine. Not that I advocate that. FEDGOV could try ditching imperial ambitions and keeping the money home in order to foster national cohesiveness.

 This was something advocated in Localism, a Philosophy of Government. Written in 2012, it is more relevant today than it was the first day the ink dried. Counties should be able to change states if they feel like the state capital or the rest of the state does not share their values or is taking advantage of them. What is just, should they be forced to stay and be governed by the people in Eugene and Portland who look down on them? 

I was surprised that most counties in eastern Oregon had already had votes to leave...

Sinema Goes Independent

 Arizona Senator Sinema leaves Democratic Party, registers as independent. She is left, but has often served as a brake on the far-left elements of the Democratic party. Better to Hurt Your Own Tribe than Help the Other

 If you have any doubt that Americans have been polarized and tribalized out of rational thinking see this study. Most participants would not give their tribe two dollars if it meant the other tribe got one dollar. 

Opening up ballot access so that more choices are available is the best way to lower the emotional costs of switching brands so that people can start evaluating choices based on reason rather than tribal identidy.
